About a month ago I came across a few site that had some nice PNG format Sonic artwork on them and felt inspired to make the Sonic series on Mega Drive. In my laziness, I cut it down to Sonic, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, with Sonic and Knuckles to follow at the end (sort of a series sort of thing). So, I present box 1 of 4!
These boxes see my return to Japanese templates (yay!). For this box, I wanted to try to capture the feel of the western version a bit without making it look outright western on a Japanese template. Tried a simple approach as well, in an attempt to be reminiscent of the time the game was made in. Added the square/circles to the background and zig-zag side borders in honor of the official Japanese boxart (Google it, its not right) and I felt the background was rather bland so I added some Sonic-in-motion silhouettes.
On the back, again, tried to keep the simple approach, keeping the same style and design as the front. Ziz zag returns along with the Sonic silhouettes and squares/circles. Cocked some screens as this seemed to be quite popular with the Japanese boxes and tried to add some excitement to that text. Japanese text should be very close to the blurb on the back of the official, and there is not much text because there isn't much on the back of the official so, again, I just follow the era's design style.
Temps were all made by myself, along with icons and the Mega Drive logo which was a full rebuild from scratch, all from studying as many pics of Sonic MD game boxes I could find.
A big credit to the Sonic Art Archive link and the Video Game art Archive link for their scans and thanks to my old Sonic The Hedgehog screensaver! Also, a credit to P0ker and his Sonic series which were also a big inspiration to make these.
Anyway, I hope you like it, I'll upload a 300dpi printable over the next few days.
This is killer. I really like the overall "dark" colour scheme, it has this "Megadrive cool" style (compared to the lighter Ninendo, back in the early 90s). The temp and the logos look flawless as well, and the silhouettes fit well. Good work also with the layout of the various elements, characters, screenshots, logos etc. Really great and official looking :)
P.S. I think the BG of version 1 was a nice choice.
Hey, thanks for the feedback guys, gald you all liked it. I'm a real sucker for Retro stuff, not to mention Japanese design. Just uploaded a 300dpi printable too for those who like the orient look. Enjoy.
G'day!
