Here's my Sonic 2 box, box number 2 of 4 in my Sonic series.
For the front, I wanted to work in the sky elements from Sky Chase and Wing Fortress zones from Sonic 2, mostly cos I found them the most challenging in the game, yet still keep a simple, Japanese boxart styled approach. The clouds are Photoshop brushes that I used to create that heavy cloud scene at the bottom of Robotnik, then layered and blended with the pink to blue grad. Decided to work Sonic and Tails into the logo this time, having them sort of sitting on the 2, and a quick revision to the logo and a blurred scene in the background. Added Sonic and Tails in their plane to give the background a little something extra. I also experimented a bit with depth of field here using blurring techniques with the scene in the background, some of the clouds and the rings.
On the back, clouds again to carry the feeling of the front over, screens arranged accordingly in a similar way to the official and fanned the text this time. Again, temp and elements created by myself.
The pink and blue sunset comes from inspiration from some official Sonic 2 Game Gear artwork, which is also the image from the front cover that is blurred. Big thanks again to the Sonic Art Archive and Video Game Art Archive, and again to p0ker for his Sonic series.
Anyway, I hope you like it, 300dpi printable will be added shortly after the box itself!!
I often feel that most retro boxarts feel too bland, as artists try to emulate the retro boxart style too rigidly. But this box is fanstastic, perhaps one of the few that successfully sticks within guidelines of the retro box and yet still be creative.
I love the use of colors. A minor nitpick would be that the depth of field effects don't especially come across very well, and personlly I think the clouds/background would look better without the blur.
Hey guys, wow, thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. With the depth of field, yeah, i failed a bit at that, i think i went a bit to heavy and lost sight of the technical way to do it, but it was fun to try anyway. I think i got caught up in the glow it produced so hence why i did it.
I was torn wether or not to go with Sonic and tails twice on the cover, i decided to go down the path as i felt the image of Robotnik was a little boring without something else there. Will take note next time though, i imagine its a big no no with Sega!!!

That is the most coolest Sonic 2 box out there. Is that Eggman on the front floating in his machine from Emerald Hill Zone? I can't tell but otherwise AWESOME!

I love the clouds man. They add a great sense of atmosphere to the box. You've also done some slick text work on the back as well. Really nice stuff.
