A year or so ago I found a copy of Bushido Blade at a thrift shop, it was a game I had played back when the Playstation first came out and to this day it hasn't been challenged in terms of innovation and a unique fighting game engine. The game could be called a sword-fight simulation, in the sense that all it took was one strategically placed strike to kill your opponent. Matches often lasted no longer than ten or fifteen seconds.

Ever since I had purchased the game I'd been wanting to make a DVD case cover for it, and when I saw the Theme of the Month competition: link I knew I had an excuse to do it.

It's pretty much what you'd expect from a Samurai game cover: Cherry blossom petals blowing in the wind and a samurai sword. The seven kanji on the spine are actually the characters for the seven virtues of Bushido: Rectitude, Courage, Benevolence, Respect, Honesty, Honor, and Loyalty (Thanks, Wikipedia!)

I ended up cheating and using a brush for the floating petals (Something I'm typically opposed to.) The brush was made by this DeviantART user: link

I hope you guys like it, critiques and criticism is encouraged, higher resolution printable is available.

I thought it was a Bleach box at first...

I love it. My only complaints would be that I don't like how the logo is working, and the bottom right hand corner of the back seems to be missing something. It needs something there.

Something about the font of the "Bushido Blade" turns me off. I think it's because my mind is registering the perspective well enough. Still however, HNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGHH.

I'm a sucker for swords, silhouettes and white backgrounds. This is wonderful.

The back is beautiful. The front is good too, but I'm not a fan of plain black silhouettes.

I really appreciate all the nice compliments. I'm pretty happy with this one, myself.

#5, Thanks. Regarding the back, I can see where you're coming from, but I really like the emptiness. I'm not sure if it would have the same peaceful feeling if it had any more.

#6, believe it or not, that's actually the official font used for the title. It looks a little strange, but I felt comfortable enough with it to use it.

I'm a little heartbroken that this has twenty-three favorites and only ten comments (One of which is my own.) If you like a box enough to favorite it, don't you like it enough to tell the artist WHAT you like (And dislike) about it, and in addition, bump it so it gets shared with more people?

I know that I am sort of late to the "Party", but this box blew me away. I am a sucker for this type of work, and I love your use of it. Amazing job, Slyder. Amazing Job.

I remember playing Bushido Blade vaguely almost what? Fifteen years ago or so? I don't remember much of the gameplay EXCEPT for the level where you could cut down the bamboo, and I was amazed at the level of depth at that point. So simplistic, so beautiful, and so to the point, I am going to hunt down this game again just because of this box.

Woah, this is absolutely amazing. Can you please show me where you found that katana hilt render by any chance? That'd be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot for the support, gang. I'm hungry for more exposure for this thing, so it makes me happy that you guys are still noticing it.

#17, I googled "Katana" and used the pen tool to trace over one of the images. I made the flayed, flowing, ribbons on the hilt from scratch. Here's the image I used: link

Because you requested it:

Very artistic. Great use of space and minimalism. I also think the presentation and colour use is excellent.
