Good for a first, is that picture from the demo album on your computer? Any way, try to get a background from the game, maybe add another render in there. your using GIMP right? It looks great, I'll fav.
I'm probably the only person on this site old enough to remember the toy, Colorforms. Well, to save you the time of looking it up on Wikipedia, Colorforms were these little stickers of people, clothing and accessories that came with a scene board that you could stick them too. You could remove them and stick them over and over. It was kind of like a paper doll, but they made them for all kinds of themes. I had the DC Comics edition with Batman and Superman. Anyway, the point is, this box feels like a Colorforms scene. As you can see, the render of Master Chief that you used has some obvious light and shadows on him. The light source is apparently above his left shoulder and slightly behind him. The colour of the light is essentially white. This doesn't match your scene at all. Your light source from the setting sun would be much lower and darker reddish-orange in colour. You can fix this easily in GIMP or Photoshop by creating a new layer, painting over the lightest areas of the character with the appropriate colour then setting the layer blend mode to overlay. It could also be done with other image editors, but you'd need to be more precise with your painting and colour choice since the editor won't help you with the blending.
Certainly an improvement. This version looks a little bit squished and I think it's slightly too dark, but it blends much better. Stretch it out so that it doesn't look crushed from the sides and I'll give you a FAV. :)
