I think your on your way to something with the front. I like the crystal Mario render, but I don't know what you did to the logo, it looks pretty bad. The back, as Trev says, is really effortless. It looks like a word document with images inserted.
My best suggestion, either to update this box, or for your next design, would be to take a look at the back of some official boxes, or some of the designs from artists on here, and try to incorporate the elements you see.
