It seems to me like you used paint. Try GIMP. Its not exactly a bad first its just not the best first.

#2, Go easy on him/her, its only he's/her's first box
The flaws i see is the ds template is stretched, the characters and logos have a white background, the actual background is a little boring and all that unnecessary white around the box.
Thats about it and as KaitouKid said get Gimp or Paint.Net and try them both out see which ever one is easier for you
