Man I couldnt wait to post this. I finished this yesterday. I started around 11:30am and finished around 2:30pm. I had alot of fun and I wanted to try something new.
#3, Yea the spine I made it like that just for fun really. I like the spine being thick. I was actually going to make an inside for it sort of like the Doom 3 pc box, but I turned that down.
It wasnt inspired by KoopaDasher's It was actually inspired by the Japanese nintendo 64 Super Mario 64 game box. Im sure his was inspired by it as well.
#7 i'm having flash backs to SM64 - "Swim, Jump, Fly - 3D Action - Only for" reminds me of the Japanese SM64 boxart with the same written in the circle behind Mario link.
Anyway, if i made this i'd be busting my balls to post it too. Pure eye candy, just freakin' awesome man. I must say, you're easily one of my top 5 artists on the site.
However, there is no real reason why the spine is that wide and why the rating on the back is inverted. Not to mention some usual issues with the make-up of your typography. Like the text on the back and why the "w" of "wii" on the spine is more on the left making it almost touching the back. Sure there's the small "TM" but you have to find a balance for such things.
In case that's supposed to be inspired by the japanese N64 packages you should do some more research since the proportions seem a bit off for that.
Afaik Yoshi is not a charakter in the game. There are some references like a yoshi-shaped planet and one or two eggs, but that's about it.
This is all around really cool. I think the spine looks a little funny so big. I'm also not feeling the template you used. I like that you didn't build your design around one, but the outcome looks a little odd in some areas with no ESBR on the front and the one in the back color inverted. Also I feel the text on the back could be improved. For a cover that doesn't follow the usual template/retail look, I feel like you could have focused more on typography and text art to really emphasis that is all out fan art and not supposed to look official. Really well rounded box though over all *thumbs up*

The only concern of mine is that the box's spine is too wide for a single DVD case. Is this supposed to be some sort of Special Edition?
Either way, it's pretty good. Kind of reminds me of one of KoopaDasher's though (just the ring on the cover, to be specific, lol).

The front cover should be holographic to make it look like Mario's flying out of the box.
