I'm bored with presentation standards. I'm bored with the "grand" boxart. I'm bored with "perfection".

In the next couple of boxes I'm going to move away from the grand box.VGBoxart has this notion of grand boxarts with a front cover and a back cover made at a crisp high resolution. Well, why can't we make only just front covers? why does a "good" box need to have a back cover?

I think one can make multiple great boxarts, by not aiming for the one "perfect" box. Sometimes a video game/movie/music can not be done justice with just one box. ESTSM is one such movie.

I have several different ideas for the future, that will try to move away from the established standards of VGBA. If you like this, tune in for more later.

#1, If you weren't already on my favorite artist's list, this mentality and initiative would've put you there.

While there are some things that I don't think a box NEEDS, like a back, it still is a good thing to have, because otherwise it feels like an incomplete project. But then again, I'm in the business of alternate inserts, rather than alternate covers. If all you desire as an artist is to create hypothetical covers, then a back is just extra fat that should be cut off. How often has an artist broken down the quality of his cover by forcing himself to create a back just to appease insignificant and unnecessary standards that the community has forced onto him?

Kudos to you. I'm all for this. (Though I really can't figure out why one might prefer a lower resolution.)

I love the pink one. The eraser effect makes so much sense if you've seen the movie. All though you don't think you need a back I would love to see a back for the pink cover. You have a great design going and I just want to see more. I think the reason we make backs is because we can print them, more stuff to be creative with, taking a game and making a complete design for it, gives you a bigger project to do, shows effort, gives enough design to show talent, allows you to have more creativity than others because a lot of fronts look the same as the next person, and gives me more to love when I like a box.

I'm not a fan of just fronts that is the reason I've only done it twice but I love this. It shows effort, the pink one gives so much of the story without saying anything, and it looks so artsy. Super fav for the pink design.

@#3, That is one of the reasons why I went about this project. A lot of people have the ability to make a good front but the moment they introduce text and layout, the design quality suffers. No one should compromise the overall design just to have something "complete" - which ironically no design can ever be. There is always room for improvement or refinement.

I should've worded it better, but by lower resolution I mean something that is made on a smaller scale. More variants can be easily created and image manipulation possibilities increase (factor in scale and cropping). I feel that most people try to perfectly balance visual elements in the regular fashion (e.g. center aligned title and image) and don't explore the possibilities of contrasting harmonies.

@#5, Thanks for the reply Trev. The majority of the boxes on the site are not printable, so if anyone does make a back it is to either show off skill or increase the size of the project as you said. Speaking purely from my point of view, I don't need to show off that I'm capable of making a back as everyone knows that I am. To extend a project, I decided to make three variants with completely different images and typography. Three is more than one, and therefore more to love. Now if all that holds true for this boxart, why shouldn't other members try something similar. There are people who are better at designing just fronts - if they don't want to make a back then they shouldn't be forced. Perhaps they can make several fronts, to compensate and increase the size of the project.

I do however believe that effort alone doesn't dictate the quality of design. A good design could happen purely accidentally and that is why I suggest the idea of multiple variants.

As for the boxarts, yes the pink one took more time. The typography is specifically done by me which lends it a distinct personality. However, this doesn't take away from the other two. I knew the pink design is more "criterion-esque" so to speak, while the other two focus on the love story aspect of the story. While subtle Depth of Field effect hint at the memory erasure aspect, some of my friends and I enjoy the movie purely as a romantic dramedy. Its really just a different take.

I like all three versions a lot, but the first one on the left is my favorite. Even with just a glance at it, it somehow portrays the right emotion of the film.

I love all three. Distinct designs, but united with a common theme.

I can't wait for your other different ideas.
