Comment on Grand's American McGee's Alice: Madness Returns Box Art / Cover.
Thanks to everyone in the WiP thread (link. I've never worked so hard on a box. 98% of everything on the front was drawn from scratch using nothing but the pen tool, including the logo. For reference, here's how most of it began: (link)
What I did was create a separate layer for each different color, mask them into the shape of the dress or hand or whatever, and then individually feather and adjust each layer to make it look more natural.
All I can say is that I LOVE the pen tool and can't imagine ever making a box without it.
As for the back, I wanted to keep things simple and uniform as I did with the front. Please view full or printable.
Title-wise, I took a tiny liberty. Technically, the official title of the upcoming enhanced remake/sequel/re-imagining of the 2000 original is entitled 'Alice: Madness Returns.' But seeing as I chose not to have any dev logos or anything, I felt obligated to include American McGee's name.
I consider this to probably be one of if not my best box. Over 400 layers and a week of hard work.
And the plastic is by Jevan as usual.

You are a legend my friend, I ADORE IT!

#2, It's safe to say that MARKER is the only "legend" around here. I would class Grand as a "veteran", someone who totally knows what he's doing.

The floor on the front is exactly what I imagined it would be. You are insane for doing it all in pen tool shapes in Photoshop. That sort of work is usually when I turn to Illustrator. This box reminds me of what Slyder did recently with his Sonic box. With one exception, that being the way you handled the back. And I think you did a superb job on that as well. People like you are inspiring to try something bold, but only if I can pull it off with the same skill. You definitely deserve MasterWorks on this in my opinion.

#4, Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of Illustrator. But I'm upgrading from Photoshop CS3 to Photoshop CS5 Extended next week. Looking forward to that.

#3, It's his own opinion and he can call him what he wants. In MY opinion Marker isn't a "legend" either.
As for this design, simply remarkable work Grand. Creating this all yourself in Photoshop is incredibly impressive, and you've pulled off the front and back designs flawlessly. I'm glad you were able to find a way to fit in the falling cards concept on the back. Seriously amazing work here.

Incredible work, it's just amazing that you did this in PS. The cards on the back are one of the best parts of this IMO.

Crap, thats some freaking amazing custom work. Looks almost like a photo. Hof for sure.

#11, Cards are official artwork. I don't think I could've done that kind of detail using only the pen tool in PS.

Liked it during "work in progress" and love it now.
Really, it's a awesome work, man. The only sad thing about it is that the box is so awesome, it made me want to play this game when comes out... but I don't have a PS3, 360 or a decent PC to play! T_T

Terrific job here. I love everything about it.

If you can get your hands on Illustrator, cheaply/easily I would wholly recommend it. You would have a lot of control over the pen tool and you get quite a few different tools you wouldn't in Photoshop, such as combining and subtracting objects from shapes. Plus you can resize everything infinitely larger as needed, and it won't degrade the quality.

#13, Yeah I know the cards are, but not the art on the front. You did a really great job with it, I really like what you did with the floor and the tile towards the left.

Excellent work Grand, you've come a long way since your early boxarts - which frankly I thought seemed uninspired.
Your box ideas are becoming better, and it helps that you can execute them just as well.
Like I said last time, ditch Photoshop for Illustrator if you want to work with the pen tool (as soon as you get your copy of CS5). That is the perfect program for your illustrative work.
