Here is my box for the VGBA Cup Round 2. So, when I first heard what the round would entail I wasn't too happy. I had never played any of the consoles, and I didn't know much about any of the games. I decided on this game as it was probably the one I knew most about, and I could make the best box out of.

Looking at old boxes, I'm not going to lie, most of them are ugly. With this box, I set out to be retro, but I also wanted to make a good box that didn't fail because of the standards set by boxes from that era. I think I succeeded in doing that, and I represented this game well, with its bright colours.

I hope you like the box, and any comments are appreciated.

*credit for the logo to tmrd ;)
Anyway, I think it is really good, but looking at the finished product, I wish I could change some things. Move the 2 down, and I think you should remove the enemies coming out of the 2. Just the 2 with the blue-tinted characters in it is enough for me. I would keep Mario and Luigi where they are though.

Oh yeah, credit to tmrd for the awesome logo!

I did have the 2 moved down at one point, but I think it looks better this way. I like the characters coming out of the 2. It didn't look quite as good without them.

Very awesome job on this box. I always thought SMB2 was one of the strangest Mario games for some reason. If I remember right it's the one with the plants. As for the box, I like that you changed the color scheme. It looks much better than it did before, the colors go very well together. The front is also pretty unique, with the entire design based around the 2. Nice job!

One of the more original boxes for the VGBA Cup Round Two, and thats a good thing. This looks really nice.

I really like it, except it looks more modern to me than retro. Still, great job!

Pretty good job, although UF is right in the fact its more modern than retro. Still though, a great box art none the less.

The only things out of place are the Koopa Troopa and Bullet Bill on the front (the turtle and bullet) and on the back the Venus Fire Trap (the plant) as they were never in the game. As you've never played the games much i'll overlook the incorrect characters and give it a fav.

Seeing some of you are a little younger, i'll throw this bit of trivia up here for you: the real SMB2 link is actually SMB: The Lost Levels link . Nintendo of America thought it was too difficult for westerners and decided to re-work an already release game (in Japan) called Doki Doki Panic link . SMB 2 is really nothing more than a sprite and soundtrack change. Lucky for Nintendo it was a good game otherwise...

Very nicely done. It looks good, even for modern standards, but it looks like it came from the time period. It's got a strong mix of good design and accurate design.

How did I miss this?

This is nice man, good job! my only complaint is the tagline on the back, it's a little hard to see in parts.

Pretty nice, though I think that things like all those drop shadows and the NEW Official Nintendo Seal take away the retro experience.

As a side note, some renders look choppy and the Nintendo logo in both front and back is stretched.

Cool, nevertheless.

This is pretty nice. My only complaint would be that for the comp, it doesn't look as retro necessarily as some others. But on the other side, I see that you wanted to go a different direction, and I like how this turned out. It seems like a mix between both worlds, which is refreshing.

kickin' it back to modern retro :) I love the front!

i agree with #10 about the tagline at the back. if you could change,
the color and the font to a more fitting style, than this is worthy my fave.

#6, It's the logo. Can't help but notice you did the more modern style Mario logo and the "2", which didn't come into use until Super Mario World. If something was done about the logo, I could fav. given that this is supposed to be accurate to the time period, I am finding it hard to forgive that gaffe.

Well, there was no reason that this type of logo couldn't have been created for that era. I interpreted the boxes for Mario from that era to be colourful and fun, and I didn't want to bring that down with a boring logo.

There's some obvious quality and consistency problems on both the back and front but I really like the concept you had. It's really bright and catchy.
