Dragon Ball Super: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 box art cover
By avatar Vintagesonic1 19 on March 31st, 2024

I made this box mainly for the DBZ BT4 mod by TeamBT4 and because due to the tragic recent passing of Akira Toriyama, I wanted to make something Dragon Ball related to express my appreciation for his work.

This box took 3 days to make. I went through a lot drafts, until I eventually decided on this design. Trying to cram all the characters on the design was rather difficult, but what I ended up with, I think looks quite nice. I made the logo from scratch, which was a tedious, but fun process. Also sorry that there's no back cover this time. If you look at my previous work, it's apparent I'm not very good at designing them and didn't want to ruin the design by having a terrible back cover.

Maybe I'm going to be pessimistic to criticize your work but really, if you wanted to design art in honor of the iconic Akira Toriyama, what you did is an insult to his legacy.
First of all, a box without a back cover is an incomplete box, an incomplete and half-hearted job. You say that it took you 3 days to make the design, a well-executed job takes weeks or even months, it depends on how much dedication and effort you put into it.
The cover is horrible, the characters you chose are not outstanding except for Goku and Vegeta. The logo however is the most disappointing. What is that empty black strip where it says Budokai?
That is to say, the logo is wrong in every sense, in size, dimensions and location. Don't tarnish Akira's name, you made a cover for a game that doesn't exist. From a port on Playstation 2 that I repeat does not exist!
Your work is scarce, poor and boring. I do not like.

Wow. This isn't criticism this is just insulting.

For starters, I designed the logo based on the original Budokai Tenkaichi logo. That also has the black strip next to where it says Budokai. The characters included are meant to mirror the official box art for the BT4 mod, as I wanted to honor the original designers vision, but do my own thing. At the end of the day, It's a box art made by a fan, published to a site very few people still use. I spent hours of my own free time designing it and you are acting like I've made the most disgraceful thing imaginable. And don't you think you're being a bit hyperbolic by saying that I am an insult to Toriyama's legacy? Like bro, chill. I made something out of my love for Dragon Ball and not only are you insulting me, but you're also insulting him by continuing to spread negativity and disrespect. Akira Toriyama's legacy is vast and encompasses a wide range of interpretations and fan creations inspired by his work. While your opinion is valid, there are more constructive ways to offer feedback.

Furthermore, I understand that my design may not resonate with everyone, but it was created with passion and respect for the source material. If you don't like it, that's fine. You don't need to act like I'm a stain on his legacy or something.

Here's the link to original box art I was basing it off by the way: link

First off - I appreciate that you keep contributing to this page, and took the time to create and share your latest project. Thank you.

I dig the color scheme on this one. It's giving a crazy, vibrant vibe. Myself, I am not familiar with this mod, but I did have Dragonball Z Budokai for PS2 - it sure is a colorful game (series), and this cover reflects that.

I do miss a back cover though, despite what you say about your skills in that area. -Well, I look at that as just another reason to actually go for it. With this game, and the color scheme, you could've gone wild with the back. I encourage you to make a back cover on your next project. Oh yeah, and I know text design can be tedious-- It's cool that you made it from scratch. I'll be on the lookout for more from you.

I know nothing about DragonBall but from a design point of view I can weigh in.

The 3 characters on the left (2 girls and glasses guy). Kinda look lower resolution / faded / less contrast, or a slightly different art style to every other render on the cover. The other characters do seem a bit randomly placed behind the two (maybe) super saiyan people. Maybe some slight re-jigging will help wiht them. I'd make Goku bigger (as he's the only one I know haha)

The two super saiyan people, seem like it would work really well if they appeared closer and more back to back. With the guy on the right behind the guy on the left, hiding more of his back armour. Guy on left, have his hair and shoulder coming over the guy on the right.

The colours and & presentation reminds me of other random DrangonBall materials I've seen over the years, but again I don't know much about it. I do feel like with some extra time and maybe some help you could do some improvements to this.

The logo looks pretty good to me, it is similar to the logo you were trying to make it seem like. Maybe make the "super" a bit bigger so it can fill the empty black space a tad.

As for back covers I don't think you are bad at them, practice makes perfect and more you do, the better you will be

Hope that helps in some way
