Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater box art cover
By avatar TrevOwnz 42 on January 12th, 2012

The inspiration for this design came from the artwork style of Peace Walker, with the yellow look of the original cover. I might be a little rusty so give me your thoughts on the box. Also, nice to see a new theme for VGBoxArt. Saxon is to thank for my return.

It's nice to play around in Photoshop again. School project requirements usually are Illustrator or InDesign related. Link to some of what I have been working on link. Feel free to add me on Facebook if you want to chat, a few of you did so while I was gone link

A combination of Peace Walker and Snake Eater instantly came to mind when first seeing this. The inspiration from both covers is clear, yet you were able to strike a middle ground between the two and create something totally new and unique.

After looking over the printable, I can't say I have anything negative to say about this. Excellent work.

Sexy! What's up with the color brown lately :/ Every time I see a box made with brown (AC Revelations by swe08 for example) it turns out in something beautiful! rather than actually looking like shit :P

Well I haven't been on this site in months, so I can say it wasn't due to trend in my situation.

This box is awesome TrevOwnz. I prefer this over the original MGS3:SE cover, its unfortunate you designed for PS3, would've made a nice replacement. Anyway, keep it up, hope to see more submissions from you.

A nice design you've got here, Trevor, the art in the front looks amazing and overal, this looks really good. Even though, there are things that I really don't like, starting with the fact that you used caps all across the back's text, which is something I personally dislike; the lack of a tagline and the way the synopsys leaves too much blank space at its right is also kind of disturbing; I also dislike how the screenshot's text is, or seems to be, the same size of the synopsys text, in my opinion it should be at least a bit smaller. On the front, my only complaint is that the logo blends too much into the background at some points, mostly at the left part of the "Tactical Espionage Action" text; this also happens in the spine. The image looks distorted, and this is specially noticeable at the back text, I'm guessing it was due to skewing the box into the perspectived template.

Still a great design, even when I dislike some things about it.

I understand your thoughts but I will explain some of them so you understand why I did what I did. While in college I have learned a lot and have broken my shell to so many things. One is, a design is never to simple but if it's effective it needs no more design and another is type importance based on color, size and family (bold, thin, medium). So in other words less is more. This is why I picked Metal Gear Solid. They have this art style mastered, actually a lot of countries outside the US have great art styles. We see uppercase as loud or abrasive but sometimes the blocky shape of full uppercase works with a blocky design, like the one I have. When the art does the talking, why should the text too? So like I said with case importance I showed the title of the text with a bold larger size to show main importance and color in the second row with a thin typeface family to balance it out. Bold and color stands out to much. Then the body text is usually more basic and easy to read, not bold or colored. I kept the text the same as the original because the text is perfect and straight to the point. I would have been rewording it for the simple fact of plagiarism but when we do these boxes it's to give a box a new feel a new look but not always to completely change it. That is what I was going for. I wanted to keep it Metal Gear Solid so I pulled any a few styles from different covers or art into one box. The size of the screen shots were because the text reads at a good size and I wanted to fill that space so the shots were made to that size to fill in the remaining space. I have a set space between each shot with a larger space outside the shots and between the upper bar and bottom template. Also the empty space on the top right balances the empty larger but darker space in the bottom left. A small bright and a large dark space have similar weight. Though a thin upper type with proper layout could be balanced in one of the empty spaces. The distorted look you see is Photoshop not skewing perfectly, not much I could do but try and redraw in illustrator that whole back and skew it on there but seeing how that is only for presentation it's not worth the effort.

I do agree with legibility of the logos and was contemplating making it darker behind it. I did originally have a darker space but it grabbed to much attention. With some playing around I might get it to work better.

Mostly why I did what I did is from the requirements at school. Using one typeface and using color and family to show design. I could throw in some more type and a tagline but the blocky look was the goal but I think I captured the MGS look.

Oops. I just noticed I didn't credit Sens for the template. I hadn't uploaded in so long it slipped my mind.

Sorry man <3
